Stories from the Stage and Beyond
For the Love of Basketball
Some stories don’t start with a lesson—they start with a scream. This one begins with the Knicks, a run-down sofa on West 146th Street, and a mother who couldn’t always say I love you out loud—but could absolutely lose her mind over a missed free throw. When I walked toward the apartment building where we lived on West 146th Street between Amsterdam and Broadway, I could hear my mother screaming before I reached the stoop.
Why Celebrating Yourself Changes Everything
A couple of weeks ago, my friend Angela invited me to speak to a 5th-grade class at Lacoochee Elementary School in Dade City, Florida—a neighborhood where opportunities don't always come easy. But what that community does have are passionate, dedicated teachers and a principal who make sure their students are exposed to the wider world, no matter what.
Healing After Surgery: Choosing Positivity in a World of Algorithms
I am three weeks post-shoulder surgery, and I am doing very well. I had a complete 100% rotator cuff tear, a bone spur, arthritis, bursitis, and labrum tearing. This was the result of decreased muscle mass, which caused my bone to drop. Every time I lifted my arm—especially to dance—the bone spur cut a little more into the rotator cuff and eventually into the muscle. And there you have it.
The Magic of Book Clubs: Connection, Healing, and the Power of Shared Stories
I've heard about book clubs since Oprah introduced them on her globally famous talk show over two decades ago. I never would have imagined that I would one day be an author, with my book becoming the topic of discussion in several book clubs.

Dover Elementary is a small school nestled on Nelson Avenue in Tampa, Florida, where the children of migrant field workers harbor magnificent dreams for themselves.
Interstices—A Break in Continuity | A Journey to 1930’s Ybor City with Tampa City Ballet
Picture this… a bygone era! Ybor City, in the 1930s, just before the outbreak of World War II. There are speakeasies and hidden (prohibited) escape rooms where people gather to eat, drink, flirt, play chess and indulge in illegal gambling.
Lights, Tutus, Action! Running From Yesterday: The Musical—A Dance Production Inspired by My Book
"If you’re blue and you don't know where to go to, come with me to the Running from Yesterday: The Musical and dream night of my young life!"
— Little Margarette
"Ok, Margarette, don't panic. Everything's gonna be fine. We're starting the show 10 minutes late. Everyone is relaxed and hanging out in the audience, but everything will work out."
I Published My First Book, Now I’m Producing My First Show!
After three years of hard work, five editors (including an Australian book coach), and a therapist on speed dial, I am still in awe that I've finally published my first book!
Throughout the writing process, I experienced endless moments of gratitude and humility, and the feedback from readers continues to astound me.
As Maureen from one of my favorite musicals, Rent, once said, “all you have to do is jump over the moon.” She meant taking the metaphorical chance on something big, something that seemed out of reach, something almost impossible.
Well, I did just that when I decided to turn my book launch into a show!
