Interstices—A Break in Continuity | A Journey to 1930’s Ybor City with Tampa City Ballet

Picture this… a bygone era!

Ybor City, in the 1930’s, just before the outbreak of World War II.

There are speakeasies and hidden (prohibited) escape rooms where people gather to eat, drink, flirt, play chess and indulge in illegal gambling.

Paula Nunez, Founder and Artistic Director of Tampa City Ballet and the fantastic company dancers, took over the historic Cuban Club in Ybor City to present Interstices—A Break in Continuity.

The inspiration for the piece was drawn from the book — Tampa: Impressions of an Emigrant by Cuban author Wenceslao Gálvez y Delmonte, translated by Noel M. Smith.

My improved dance role was a speakeasy woman of the night. Alluring people into escape rooms where they find solace in clandestine activities was right up my alley. Not to mention, I could do it in a lovely costume, courtesy of La France Boutique in none other than Ybor City!
